Welk Resort Theatre is casting Rent. Joshua Carr, prod.; Dan Mojica, dir./choreo.; Justin Gray, musical dir. Rehearsals start Sept. 3. Performances run Sept. 20-Oct. 28 at the Welk Theatre in Escondido, CA.

Seeking—Mark Cohen: to play mid to late 20s, filmmaker and video artist, determined to capture "real" life on film, Roger's roommate, left behind his affluent upbringing to pursue his craft, would rather tell the story than be the story, hides behind his camera, tenor, Csharp3-G4; Roger Davis: to play mid to late 20s, former front man for a fledging rock band, tortured artist, edgy, struggling musician who's HIV+, hopes to write one last meaningful song before he dies, recovering drug addict, searches for meaning through his songwriting and guitar, playing guitar a plus, rock tenor B2-A4; Tom Collins: to play late 20s-30s, philosopher, professor, activist, strong, yet warm presence, an HIV+ computer genius who has recently returned to New York after an absence, has a deep capacity for love and understanding, former roommate of Mark, Roger and Benny, Angel's lover, the patriarch, baritenor, Fsharp2-A4; Benjamin Coffin III: to play mid to late 20s, wealthy landlord of Mark and Roger's building, went to college with Mark, lived with Roger, Maureen and Mark, married into a wealthy family, hopes to fulfill dream of building an arts studio for his friends, while making money for his father-in-law, tenor, Eflat3-F4; Angel Dumott Schunard: to play late teens to mid-20s, transvestite street drummer infected with HIV, incredible dancer with a magnetic personality, warm, lovable, nurturing, and honest, the mother hen, must be willing to convincingly play in drag, must be able to dance in heels, great falsetto, tenor C3-A4; Mimi Marquez: to play late teens to mid-20s, raw voice with high belt, fragile drug addict, sexy and street smart, dancer with AIDS and a drug problem, desperate for a place to feel safe and protected, Fsharp3-E5; Maureen Johnson: to play mid to late 20s, performance artist, not as good as she leads on, Joanne's lover, selfish, has a big range, Mark's ex-girlfriend, soprano belt, C4-F5; Joanne Jefferson: to play late 20s-30s, headstrong public interest lawyer, dry wit, Maureen's lover, affluent upbringing, comfortable with her artistic liberal way of life and conservative upbringing, insecure in her relationship with Maureen, pop belt, alto, Bflat3-E5; Female Ensemble (3): 20s-30s, great actors/singers who move well to portray various characters including: Alex Darling, Mark's Mom, Roger's Mom, Joanne's Mom, "Seasons Of Love" Soloist; Male Ensemble (3): 20s-30s, great actors/singers who move well to play various characters including: Joanne's Dad, Life Support Group, Squeegee Man, "Seasons Of Love" Soloist.

Auditions will be held July 8, 10 a.m. (9:30 a.m. sign in) at the Welk Theatre at 8860 Lawrence Welk Drive, Escondido. Prepare a rock ballad that shows off range. Singing material from the show is encouraged. You may be asked to sing 16 bars only. Bring sheet music in the proper key; an accompanist will be provided. No tapes, CDs, or a cappella singing. Be prepared to dance or move if asked. Bring pix & résumés. $300-$400/wk. – housing possible for out of the area.
