San Diego Escape Rooms You Need to Try
If you’ve heard of escape rooms but aren’t quite sure what they are or where to find them — you’ve come to the right spot! Whether it’s for a date night, a family outing, or a team bonding experience, escape rooms have become increasingly popular in the last few years. And if you’ve yet to try an escape room yourself, you’re in for a real treat! San Diego escape rooms, in particular, offer a wide variety of games to choose from, depending on what you’re in the mood for.
When you and your team set out to complete an escape, you’re typically put in a themed room and are given a certain amount of time to “escape” based on clues and puzzles. Sometimes your clues rest in the clock on the wall, underneath the carpet, or within a book hidden behind a secret door.
Between scary games, futuristic games, and mystical games, let’s take a close look at the escape rooms this adventurous city offers (and see which one is best for you).
Welk Resorts Escape Rooms
Between dining, exploring, and enjoying off-site adventures, you might be surprised to hear that Welk Resort offers our own twist on San Diego escape rooms. Depending on the time of year, we have two themed escape rooms to choose from, each of which can hold 10-14 people at a time.
The Bookings family from Bangor, Maine are among the Welk Owners who have escaped the routine of everyday vacations and experienced the excitement of our escape rooms. Working together, they found they reconnected in ways that don’t often happen in their day-to-day interactions.
“This was fun and challenging for the whole family!” Bookings said, “It was very well done, including the artifacts in the room. We hope to see more activities like this in the future. We can’t wait to come back and see what the next Escape will be!”
The Bookings family completed their challenge in record time and found that the Escape Room was a welcomed breakaway from technology and a chance to connect as a family.
The Unlockables offers three different Puzzle Escape Experiences. Designed specifically with the gamer mentality in mind, these rooms are good for a group size of between 3-8 people. If you’re looking for something slightly spooky and mysterious, go for Sister’s Secret. Recommended for guests 16 and over, this room has a paranormal theme that centers around a house investigation. The idea? Neighbors have been witnessing flashing lights and unexplainable sounds coming from the home. It’s up to you and your team, if you’re brave enough, to uncover the secrets of the haunted sisters who once lived here.
In the AI room of the Exit Game, artificial intelligence has taken over the world and the fate of humanity is in your hands. When it comes to San Diego escape rooms, this one is super high-tech and has only a 40% pass rate. The idea is that your friend Jonathan Adams, a software engineer, has disappeared after being accused of a digital attack on the government. You need to clear his name by figuring out the clues — but must do so while staying on the good side of his AI digital assistant. This is a good escape room for a group of 10 or more, especially if the group is somewhat experienced in escape rooms already.
At The Entrapment, your mind is the key to your escape. They offer two rooms — The Disappearance at Fogmore Manor and The Bayou: Legend of the Midnight Raven. In the Fogmore Manor puzzle, you’ll be on the search for your missing business partner (alongside the spirits who inhabit the house). The Bayou, on the other hand, will take you on a journey deep into the bayous of the south to search for the origins of the Fogmore family and the legend that surrounds them. If you’re looking for San Diego escape rooms that are both mind-bending and mystical, give one of these two a try.
Escapology specializes in “heart-pounding” San Diego escape rooms. Enter into a world of fantasy by starting off in the lounge before the game begins. From there, you can choose between a few games like Antidote, TH3 C0D3, and Budapest Express. From Dr. Walter Brandt, the high-ranking chemical weapons specialist, to Nitr0 who is known as the world’s greatest hacker — these games are thoughtfully produced and intellectually stimulating. These are fun options for an exciting date night or a friend’s night out.
Steal and Escape
The San Diego escape rooms at Steal and Escape offer an imaginative and creative take on 60-minute games. The Lost Expedition is advanced in difficulty and requires your team of 4-7 people to do some work for Strategos Enterprises, which specializes in the excavation of unique areas. The remnants of an ancient society were discovered 200 years ago and a team was lost. It’s up to your team to complete an excavation and bring back the artifacts you find. Their other puzzle, Mysterious Stranger, is medium in difficulty and requires 2-6 players. The idea is that it’s a simple time — until the government calls and says they need your help. This is a private game, which means you won’t be paired in a group with strangers. If you’re looking for an intimate escape room experience, give this one a try.
The Puzzalarium is known for its next-generation storytelling and immersive experience. In The Parlour, the mind of J.D. Howell has been fragmented and broken. With a simple card game and a few puzzles, you’re here to help piece together the life and times of Mr. Howell in order to rescue him. Known as a narrative puzzle escape game, the creators of Puzzalarium consider their version of San Diego escape rooms more along the lines of interactive theater. For a different sort of night out on the town, visit Hillcrest and give The Parlour a try.
Escape Era offers a fun and challenging bonding experience for you and your team or partner. You can choose from Deja Vu, where things seem familiar yet mysterious — or Arcade, where a millionaire game mogul has stashed money and it’s up to you to find it. Between finding clues and solving puzzles, these San Diego escape rooms offer a real-life experience feel that pushes the limits of your critical thinking skills. The optimal group number for these are between 6-8 players, which makes them perfect if you’re traveling with a crew.
Quicksand escape rooms are well-loved by locals and tourists alike. Choose from multiple games like the Speakeasy Nouveau, Chinatown, or The Diner. You can even opt for the fan favorite, The Speakeasy, which takes you back to the roaring twenties. When things get rowdy, the bartender locks you up and says he’ll be back in an hour (just enough time for you to figure out how to escape).
